Make a transparent WebM

Switch on Transparent in Live Mockups and export a WebM of your animated mockup that you can place over any page or video.

To make a transparent WebM in ls.graphics Live Mockups, click the round Background swatch next to the 4:3 button, switch on Transparent, then click Export. WebM is already selected, so click Export Video. The file keeps the device and its scene, and the empty area around them is see-through.

Result: iPad Pro.webm, 2882 × 2160 pixels, 60 fps, 6.65 seconds, about 132 MB, with a real alpha channel (in our test).

Questions

Can I export a transparent MP4 from Live Mockups?

No. When you switch on Transparent in the Background panel, Live Mockups shows the message “Transparency exports in WebM only”. Export the scene as WebM to keep the see-through area around the device.

Why does my Live Mockups preview show a checkerboard?

The checkerboard marks the see-through area. Place the exported WebM over a page or a video, and the device and its scene float on it with nothing behind them.

Does a Live Mockups WebM really keep transparency?

In our test, yes. We decoded the exported file: a corner pixel had alpha 0, device pixels had alpha 255, and the VP9 stream carried an alpha tag.

How big is a transparent WebM from Live Mockups?

In our test, a 6.65-second iPad scene at 60 fps and 2882 × 2160 was about 132 MB. The size depends on the scene and the canvas shape, so check the file before you upload it to a page.

Do I need to keep the tab open while a WebM exports?

Yes. The Export video box in Live Mockups asks you to keep the tab open while its progress bar runs. In our test, a 6.65-second scene at 60 fps took about 28 seconds before the browser saved the file.
